Perhaps the most powerful imagery of all that is represented within the poem “Ozymandias” is the stark representation of life and death that are alluded to both figuratively and literally throughout the work. Ozymandias is one of Shelleys most famous works due to the vast assortment of literary context, including the imagery, the deeper meaning of word choices, and. As such, what the author is ultimately seeking to portray is the identity both of Ozymandias and that of the lower levels of society that had propelled him to such a lofty and high stature. Ultimately, these processes are such that they can be defined as inevitable a fundamental understanding that is required for better appreciating the subject matter that Shelley represents. By engaging in such a level of understanding, it is the hope of this author that the reader will gain a further level of overall understanding and discernment with respect to what each of these poems seeks to represent and the mechanisms that they utilize to impact the reader and his/her engagement with the topic.Īs a function of this level of analysis, the first poem which will be analyzed is that of Percy Bysshe Shelley’s “Ozymandias”. Conversely, the metaphor will be defined as the literary process of having one thing stand for another by means of comparison. For purposes of this analysis, imagery will be defined as a construct which utilizes the readers understanding to represent something. Both of these use the themes of poem to highlight similar ideas. More recently the poem was used in an advert for the TV series Breaking Bad and in the comic series Watchmen a character is named Ozymandias. It uses vivid imagery to convey its message of transience and impermanence. Shelley’s poem is strange mix two forms of sonnet, the Shakespearean and the Petrarchan. It was written in a writing competition with his friend and fellow poet Horace Smith, whose poem ‘On A Stupendous Leg of Granite, Discovered Standing by Itself in the Deserts of Egypt, with the Inscription Inserted Below’ never gained as much recognition. This poem, ‘Ozymandias’, is based on a king of ancient Egypt, also known as Ramesses II. Shelley was also a political radical and wrote poems such as ‘England in 1819’, ‘The Mask of Anarchy’ exploring the political state of the country at that time. Although a member of the upper classes Shelley was a radical young man, eloping twice with young women he died at the age of just 29. ‘Ozymandias’ was written by English Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822). ![]()
